One of my favorite topics to discuss is gratitude. This wasn’t always the case, as twenty years ago I didn’t know what it was to feel gratitude. Apparently I wasn’t at all grateful. Nowadays, the gratitude that I feel is indescribable. See that, it is possible to change.

My last few posts were on the longer side and may have required some intense thought so I thought I would keep this one short and sweet. My gratitude is a result of years of spiritual and psychological practice and right living or at least trying to live right. If you are not as far gone as I was in relation to gratitude and can in fact experience it, then why not make an effort to focus on everything and everyone for which you are grateful? It’s easy to complain and see the negative in this life. It’s not hard to find if you’re looking for it, so don’t look. Do look at all of the positives in your life and this world. Focus on your blessings.

Think about all of the blessings in your life in the morning when you wake, at night before you go to sleep and as much as you can remember to do so throughout your day. If you do this, your heart and your life may just begin to fill with gratitude.

If you are so unhappy and depressed that you cannot feel gratitude for anything at all, keep working on your spirituality and psychological condition through the principles set forth on this site and other self-help sources or perhaps religion may be of help to you. You may need help from a mental health professional or maybe there is something not right with you medically that is causing your emotional and psychological problems. I am not a doctor or mental health professional. These are only my thoughts and opinions. It is up to you to seek the appropriate professional help.

I wish that everyone who reads this can experience at least some degree of gratitude. I do believe that most everyone who continues to progress spiritually will continue to experience more gratitude as well.

It’s difficult not to be happy when we have a grateful heart. For the first twenty plus years of my life, I had never experienced gratitude so when trying to identify with it, the closest I could come was being glad. Now that I have a grateful heart, I know that there is a tremendous difference between being glad and being grateful.

It’s difficult to imagine that I once was that person who couldn’t identify with the feeling of gratitude. It’s ironic that now that I am grateful, I find it difficult to describe. The type of gratitude that I now experience is all encompassing yet indescribable. I do know that I am grateful for the blessings in my life. Does that mean that I didn’t have blessings when I wasn’t grateful?

I have always had blessings in my life, I, however, was unable to see them as a result of my poor spiritual condition. It’s also difficult to describe what I mean by blessings. The closest word that describes blessings for me is gift but, on a scale of one to ten, if the word blessing is a ten then gift would be a four. So, unless you have experienced being grateful for your blessings, it’s tough to describe.

So, what can you do to be grateful? If you’re already grateful, that’s great, enjoy it and express it. Perhaps you would like to be more grateful or perhaps you are as I was, not grateful at all. Many years ago I was taught to make a gratitude list. This may help you with the gratitude process by training yourself to be more positive. If you’re not grateful it’s probably because you’re negative and perhaps miserable and incapable of focusing on the positive aspects of your life. By making a gratitude list, you will begin to focus on all of the good in your life. There must some parts of yourself and your life that are good and positive. I am not telling that you will necessarily feel grateful all of a sudden but this gratitude list can help with the process. Make them as much as you like.

That was the easy part. Becoming grateful may take some time. I didn’t used to like the word time much because that meant that I couldn’t get what I wanted when I wanted it, I had to work for what I wanted and wait. That required patience. I didn’t like being patient either Some will experience gratitude faster than others. Gratitude, like happiness, develops naturally as a result of spiritual and psychological practice and right living.

So, if you want to have a grateful heart, you may need to work for it and be patient. My guess is that it will develop gradually for most until one day you’ll realize that you are grateful for the blessings that have been bestowed upon you. Being grateful doesn’t imply that you have everything that you want in this life, but only that you are grateful for what you do have, as little or as much as that may be. Despite life’s trial and tribulations, we can still maintain an attitude of gratitude, providing we are spiritually and psychologically fit. I wish you gratitude and happiness.
